The General Market
Opened in 1879 to give indoor accommodation to some of the many traders, in butter, cheese, and other dairy goods with the aim of improving food hygiene.
Thus it was known as the Butter Market, but was later re-named as the General Market.
During the Second World War it was used as a dining hall for officers of the US Army Medical Corps, who were billeted nearby.
