Martin Rees Jewellers
This row of 5 shops date back to Charles II’s time. It’s thought they were workshops for small traders such as saddlers or tinsmiths, rather than dwellings, as there seem to have been no chimneys.
The building is timber-framed. The beams are still visibile in the workshop, but only the ceiling beam can be seen from outside.
They were converted into shops in Victorian times and renovated in the 1980s.
In the early 1900s Martin Rees’ shop was trading as Bell’s Modern Cash Grocers.
It has been a jewellers for about 100 years, and the original safe, fitted in 1915, is still in use. During that time, it’s only had 3 business owners. Even the landlords have remained the same local family.
